Discover how to see beyond the obvious within the landscape, and use expressive color to capture the essence of mood and atmosphere in the sky and more. Whether you work in pastel, oil, watercolor, or acrylic, you will learn to see the depth of color and create a unique and personally expressive painting in this relaxed and upbeat studio to plein air experience.

Skilled in all mediums, Susan is a seasoned studio and plein air painter who will lead you to your personal color expression in the medium of your choice. Her goal is to connect to you and inspire creativeness each day. You will learn plein air tips and tricks along with the basics of preparing for a fun and successful outdoor painting experience. We will meet each day at the Rhoneymeade Arboretum & Sculpture Garden Studio. This is an exceptional location with extensive options for subjects, ranging from old unique trees, gardens, historic structures, fields, and mountain vistas with Central PA skies. Each morning Susan Nicholas will begin with a short inspirational demonstration designed to kick-start you into the creative spirit, aid in color expression, and prepare you for plein air set-ups.

The use of underpainting and color mixing will be explored in both pastel and oil. Watercolor and acrylics will often support the early stages of expression. “Thumbnail Sketches” and their importance in supporting strong compositions and values within color will help you “Target Focus” on what inspires you in the landscape. There will be personal time at your easel following the morning demo, with support and attention given at each artist’s easel throughout each day.

Susan is a Dedicated Workshop Instructor for Gamblin Oils, a demonstrator for Multimedia Artboard, Canson, Sennelier and Jack Richeson art supplies, and has a Signature set of Richeson Hand-Rolled Soft Pastels. She has been faculty for the Plein Air Convention 3 years and led the first Sennelier workshop to Brittany, France. Susan will share many of these products and plein air experiences. Each day will begin with a short inspirational demonstration designed to kick-start you into the creative spirit.

Susan Nicholas requests that each student call or email her to discuss their personal goals and needs prior to the start of this workshop.
